A 420 is a two-person boat sailed in high school and college sailing. One person is called the Skipper. Their job is to steer the boat and control the Main Sail (the bigger sail). The other person is called the Crew. The Crew controls the Jib (the smaller sail) and uses their weight to keep the boat flat. 420s react easily to weight and wind velocity changes so the crew counteracts this by moving their weight around the boat to keep it flat. “A flat boat is a fast boat.” The crew and the skipper work together to race the boat by adjusting their sails and planning the best route around the course. Communication is key!
